Paihia is the main tourist town in the beautiful Bay of Islands. With 144 islands and bays,the Bay of Islands is one of the best maritime parks in New Zealand.

Paihia has many tourist attractions and travel activities with something to suit all ages,tastes and budgets. From adrenaline-pumping adventure to a relaxing day out, you need never be bored in Paihia.

The town has a number of safe sandy beaches and the surrounding waters are a veritable paradise for big-game anglers and divers. Cruises depart from Paihia Wharf to explore the Bay of Islands Maritime Park, including the famous Hole in the Rock and Cape Brett.

Bottlenose and common dolphins frequent the waters of the bay, and swimming with the dolphins is another exciting option. Kayaking, snorkelling and parasailing are among the many water sports available. Paihia is renowned for its historic and cultural associations.

Just 2km away is the Waitangi Treaty House where New Zealand’s founding political document, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840. The beautiful grounds overlook the bay, and a walking track passes through the mangrove forest to the cascading Haruru Falls. Guided heritage tours are available as well as Maori cultural evenings, traditional hangi meals and marae visits. Fifteen minutes across the bay from Paihia is the charming town of Russell, with its historic buildings, cafes and craft outlets. Coach Trips operate from Paihia to Cape Reinga, at the northern tip of New Zealand,and to the ancient kauri forests of the west coast.
